The City of New York has long been, and continues to be, a major source of inspiration and connecting thread throughout my artistic practice. In the summer of 1981, I took on the self-styled role of "urban visual historian" when a beloved Art Deco movie theatre was torn down to make room for a high-rise apartment building. Suddenly made aware of the precariousness of these cherished, long-standing places, I began creating a visual archive of the changing city. More than objective documents, many of these photographs also happen to play a substantial part of my own personal history - in a sense, a pictorial diary - and a work in progress, much like the city itself.
