Dundrum Castle, County Down N Ireland, is located on a high wooded hill above the small coastal village of Dundrum. Constructed by the knight 'John De Courcy' at the end of the 13th Century following his invasion of 'Ulster'. -
Dundrum Castle was built as part of a coastal defence with many other smaller castles of varying size being built along the eastern coastline.
Dundrum Castle's location commanded outstanding views over Dundrum Bay and the Mourne Mountains, the lands west towards Slieve Croob and the plains of 'Lecale' to the East as it was built high on a rocky hill offering natural all round sight and defence.
My photographs start with a view from the lower castle walls as you approach the castle itself after climbing a long single track road from the main village below. The view is looking back out over Dundrum bay - magnificent on a good day but not so healthy on a stormy wet day... the series of photos follow my journey up and into the centre of the Castle and its 'Keep', before making my way down again stopping to explore different views from the various aspects of derelict ruined walls and remaining castle buildings.
A children's playground paradise.
