The town of Tula Tamaulipas in northeastern Mexico is surrounded by hills, each of which has a cross, which, according to the Catholic religion, is used to ward off evil. Before May 3rd, the town's parishioners take down the cross to pray to it for nine days. May 3rd is celebrated as the Day of the Holy Cross. The cross is carried and taken to mass, then raised to the top of the hill at dusk with faith and devotion, accompanied by native dances and music while it is crowned and placed in its position.
