This journey began at thirty. Unemployed and adrift in uncertainty, I set out across China to drift like clouds—seeking, as Wang Wei wrote, 'that place where streams end and clouds begin'.
Everywhere unfolded the same paradox: skyscrapers rising as fast as wishes were whispered—for wealth, for happiness, for success, for health—while beneath this frenzy pulsed an exhausted quietude. China's eternal condition: a chorus of striving and stillness, desire and fatigue. And I realized—beyond the varied landscapes, beneath the different faces—we all shared the same restless rhythm.
Then how do we emerge from confusion? How to attain that cloudlike freedom? This drifting is no longer mere footsteps on earth—but the cloud that carries us toward existence itself.
