I began photographing car boot sales in 2023 after talking with my wife Lucy about her grandmother, who would regularly sell at a local car boot when Lucy was a child. The Car Boot feels like an antidote to the online sales and the creep of virtual experiences. And it also offers me a reassuring dose of nostalgia, as I often find relics of my childhood and teens amongst the bric-a-brac. And there are still bargains to be had. Though I go with the intention of photographing these days I often come away with a purchase or two. All the images are shot on film, because I want to reflect the traditional nature of the events, and to be mindful in my shooting and not be able to just "blast off" a thousand shots in the hope of getting a few "bangers".
