Unbounded

Unbounded is an ongoing photographic series that represents people who identify as gender diverse. This body of work showcases a series of portraits, each accompanied by the subject’s personal reflections, allowing each person to be heard and seen in their representation of gender diversity. Gender is a deeply personal aspect of an individual's identity that goes beyond the traditional male and female categories. It may or may not align with the sex assigned at birth. This means that there are many ways for individuals to identify themselves. Some people choose to identify with a gender different from the one they were assigned at birth, while others may identify with no gender at all. The choice to focus my photographic work on the non-binary community stems from personal awareness. I realised that I had a limited understanding of gender fluidity and how the society I grew up in often neglects this aspect, perpetuating a binary view of gender that can lead to discrimination and prejudice. Therefore, visibility becomes crucial. Unbounded aims to be like a bridge between the viewer and the portrayed, an invitation to explore gender diversity through both written and visual narratives. Although I am not part of the LGBTQIA+ community, I am dedicated to this project with the belief that equality is a collective goal. I think that only through a shared and active commitment from the whole society, which protects and promotes everyone’s rights, we can aspire to a more equitable and inclusive world. This project is my contribution toward that vision, an attempt to amplify the voices and experiences of the non-binary community so that they can be seen and recognised in their entirety. I decided to name the project this way in memory of Kai, who identified as unbounded.
