I took this photo because the filaments and the plant caught my attention, something never seen before in Laguna Garzón, one of the protected ecological areas of Uruguay and where I have lived for more than two decades. I am interested in exploring the complex intersection between ecology, human intervention and geological time, based on the accelerated expansion of Myriophyllum Quitense Kunth, an aquatic plant that has radically transformed Laguna Garzón. The recent proliferation of Myriophyllum questions the need or not for a new intervention: is it an ecological crisis or a natural rebalancing? It seems that we continue to think of nature as a “resource” for humans and not as an interconnected ecological space… Photography invites us to rethink our agency in the ecosystem and our position in the web of life.
