école de danse (2007)
Ballet originated in the Italian Renaissance courts of the 15th and 16th centuries, extended under the influence of Catherine de’ Medici from Italy to France and developed further under her aristocratic influence. In 1661 King Louis XIV founded the Académie Royale de Danse to establish standards and certify dance instructors and in 1662 made Lully the director of the Académie Royale de Musique from which the first professional ballet company, the Paris Opera Ballet, arose.
The art form has grown vertically and horizontally. The term ballet has evolved to include all forms associated with it. A student will be expected to perform neo-classical, modern and contemporary work and required to be stately and regal for classical work, free and lyrical for neo-classical work, and unassuming, harsh or pedestrian for modern and contemporary work.
