Blends of memories

Maciej Karpiński’s Blends of Memories is an ongoing body of work built from repeated encounters with the same landscapes in the Swiss Alps. Returning to the same locations across months, seasons, and years, he brings separate moments together into a single image-object. The work explores questions of memory and change. What do we remember from a place? What fades with time? And how do our perceptions shift as both the landscape and we ourselves evolve? Through layered photographic collages, Karpiński reveals landscapes as multidimensional collisions of parallel moments. Mountains that appear stable and timeless begin to expose subtle transformations. The work questions the illusion of nature’s permanence and reflects on the ways memory reconstructs the world around us. Each piece begins in the field through slow observation and repetition. The artist photographs the same composition in changing conditions, building a personal archive of fragments of one place. In the studio, the images are carefully aligned and composed digitally using tools such as Lightroom and Photoshop, allowing different temporal versions of the same landscape to share a common structure without becoming a simple montage. The final works are physical, handmade collages. Karpiński prints the photographs himself, cuts them into fragments, and assembles them into layered, three-dimensional compositions. The layers introduce shifts in depth and perspective, allowing time to be experienced spatially. What first appears as a single landscape gradually reveals itself as a convergence of many moments held in tension.
