Historically the River Lea has played an important role in shaping the development of East London’s urban landscape. During the industrial revolution it was a vital artery for transporting coal and raw materials into the city. Today, the area around the river has transformed into a recreational space creating an unexpected green eruption in the heart of the city. When I moved to Clapton few years ago, I did not know much about the River Lea and the surrounding meadows and woods. I started to cycle along the waterways and I discovered a deeply urban nature, dotted with human traces and overgrown spaces. The community of people that live along the riverbanks represents a vibrant part of the river’s modern identity. Some are drawn to the freedom of life on the water, while others seek affordable living in an area where housing costs are rising. The river mirrors the cultural diversity and distinctive character of the neighborhoods of East London through which it flows. It represents a peaceful and precious escape from the grey and fast city life. A place where the rhythm of nature blends with human life.
