If one were to attempt to capture India in a single word, the effort would be doomed from the start. A country of countless languages, religions, landscapes, traditions, and contradictions resists any form of simplification. India is not one story but an accumulation of worlds existing simultaneously.
Yet throughout my journey, one word kept returning: Kurkuma.
Turmeric appears everywhere. In the food, on the markets, in rituals, on fabrics, in the dust of daily life. Its deep yellow glow seems to permeate the country, quietly connecting places, people, and traditions. It became a visual thread running through my experience of India—a color that echoed the energy, warmth, and complexity of the streets.
But turmeric is more than a spice. Revered for its medicinal and healing properties, it occupies a unique place in Indian culture. It is both ordinary and sacred, humble and powerful. This duality mirrors the country itself: ancient yet contemporary, chaotic yet harmonious, overwhelming yet deeply human.
The significance of turmeric extends beyond symbolism. It can also be used as a photographic material. Like many alternative photographic processes, turmeric-based prints are inherently fragile; their images slowly fade and transform over time. This impermanence became an essential part of the project. Just as memories evolve and cultures continuously reinvent themselves, the image is never entirely fixed.
Kurkuma explores India through moments where contrasts coexist: intimacy and spectacle, spirituality and everyday life, stillness and movement. Rather than seeking to define the country, the series embraces its impossibility. The photographs are fragments of a place too vast and layered to be contained within a single narrative.
Kurkuma is therefore not a description of India, but a metaphor. A luminous root whose color seems to stain the landscape, whose healing qualities have endured for centuries, and whose photographic traces remind us that every image—like every memory—is ultimately temporary.
In attempting to summarize the immeasurable, one word remains:
Kurkuma.
