The Light That Calls

From an early age, I learned to read rooms and anticipate change. The Light That Calls is a self-portrait photography series rooted in childhood experiences shaped by vigilance — where visibility itself carried risk. Growing up, two forces defined my world in opposition: the natural world, which offered companionship without condition and religion, which functioned as a system of surveillance and moral control. Where nature held me, religion watched me. I stage scenes in hotel rooms using my own partially naked body. The hotel room — anonymous, transitional, belonging to no one — becomes a space I can finally own. The colour palette is deliberate. Muted and contained, it echoes the emotional self-regulation I learned young — the internal discipline of a child who understood that being seen was not always safe. As an adult, I now decide how I am seen — and by whom."
