Looking at Looking

Museums are spaces constructed for observation, yet they also transform visitors into subjects of observation themselves. In these photographs, people encounter paintings, portraits and architectural spaces, often unconsciously mirroring the gestures, colors or emotional states of the works before them. The series explores the unstable boundary between viewer and image. A visitor may become part of a historical scene, enter into a silent conversation with a painted figure, or disappear within the visual order of the museum. Photography adds another layer: while the visitors look at art, the camera looks at them—and ultimately, the viewer of the photograph completes this chain of observation.
