The project is a photographic record around the industrial area of Thessaloniki and some more vital industrial areas near it. Main parts of the project are the landscapes with the existing industrial buildings and the projection of them during the night lighting. Moreover integral parts of the images are the elements that humans left behind them. All images were taken during night by using the existing lighting of the landscapes, to achieve tension and dramatic atmosphere in combination with the nature around and the industrial buildings.
Main role for the recording of those landscapes have the time and the place -when and where they were captured. More specific the time it depends on the season of the year – the first images were taken in summertime and they were still coming through winter and spring. As a result some of the images were captured during afternoon and some in night but lighting always remain the same. Also, there are changes in the series concerning the orientation that the photographic lens have – when lens turned to the sea (Thermaikos Bay) the atmosphere has a blue sensation but when they turned to the city the atmosphere becomes a little yellow or orange because of tense lighting and air pollution.
The series A R T E F A C T S regards to an industrial landscape to the limits of the city given importance in the industrial constructs that are joined to the natural landscape. In this topic, a great helped has been offered from the night lighting by which the very strong color contracts are avoided. The root of the project follows a research around suburban areas of Thessaloniki where the most industries are placed. This sort of extension around a city (industrial areas) followed after the completion of the main sector of the city to cover more needs of the population but also marks city’s prosperity. Those areas met big bloom in Greece in the beginning of 70s, in 80s and 90s as well. But nowadays because of the economic and political crisis many industrial areas declined and as a result most of the industries closed down or transferred. In the end, some industries are still operating. They have embodied into the landscape around them so concerning the land as the public consciousness.
