I heard a number of stories about family restrictions and violence against women even when I was a child. There was a girl in our neighborhood whose father had killed her mother but we didn’t ask her questions about it. It was a forbidden topic. As I grew, the number of stories of control and violence I heard of grew as well. I started seeing them in a new light as my peers and close female friends were confronted by the problem. Completing their university studies, they
married but then they were also forbidden to work. In the best-case scenario, they were allowed to work as teachers, since there were mainly women in teachers’ collectives. I started losing my friends. Their freedom of movement was restricted. They were not allowed to think independently. Their husbands took control of everything.
