"Madrid locals call themselves 'gatos' (cats). This popular nickname dates back to the old medieval times when, in 1085, after 200 years under Moorish domination, the city was conquered by the Christians. The walls of the city were difficult to go over, but among the troops was a young soldier so intrepid and agile that he jumped over them with no problem, like a cat, making it easier for the troops to take over the city. After that episode, the population of the new conquered city, Madrid, were known as 'gatos' (cats)."
Phonegraphs taken during my daily commuting in Madrid.
