"Autism is a detachment from reality, associated with a more or less marked prevalence of the inner life." Ludwig Binswanger Families from all over Albania move to the capital, with great sacrifice, to allow their children to be assisted in the country’s unique daily facility, managed by the CICA, an Italian NGO. The cries, the stereotypes, the silence: I could not ignore the difficult approach with this parallel, mysterious world, tangible but with no access for me. I daily faced the impossibility to understand the light and darkness in their eyes, trying to grasp this “absence”. While on assignment I first focused on the children’s care but my attention kept falling on the loneliness that such a special condition imposes, despite everybody.
