An Expression of Self Realisation

This project is a visual depiction of three stages of the realisation of the self; of becoming aware of the oneness of the mind, and of the struggles of inner reconciliation. Through visualising the understanding of the self, and it's subsequent acceptance through ongoing cyclical processes of internal questioning, the work strives to deconstruct the barriers between the inward looking, and outward facing elements of the process of self acceptance. The images were shot on 6.5"x8.5" sheet film using a large format camera, and are made up of intricately controlled multiple exposures. This technique gives a great deal of control over the aesthetics of each image, and when combined with the lith printing method, it becomes a very effective tool in conveying the appropriate expression of the mood and sensibility of the piece. The photographs are printed on a rare, metallic gold paper stock, in order to beatify the portraits, drawing comparisons with religious artifacts, and to strengthen the idea of the value of being self-aware and in acceptance of ones own inner world.
