Studies on How to View Landscape (Banff)

A continuation of my more nuanced studies of the impact of tourism on some of the world’s significant landscapes, Studies on How to View Landscape is a series of photo and video works created during an artist residency in Banff National Park, Canada’s oldest and most visited national park. This project takes a few steps back from the traditional viewpoint, asking us to consider the larger picture. In the series of video works, a camera is set up to passively record the gestures and actions of tourists who are sightseeing. The sublime scenery forms a backdrop that separates the viewer from experiencing the actual place. Events transpire that are banal and occasionally absurd, especially amidst strangers with whom the view is shared.
