How many times do we say that death is inevitable and we must learn to accept the truth. Surely it is ,but what happened in my hometown,Kolkata in India on the 31st of March 2016 changed my perceptions forever. As a witness to the greatest man-made disaster to have struck the city in recent times ,I can only ask myself :Death is inevitable ,but our greed and desire for more has made it all the more inescapable .This is a rather dark narrative of a witness to the tragic incident of a flyover collapse ,which killed several people and crippled the city for days and maybe weeks to come. The pictures are chaotic with strong contrasts and intentional blurs ,serving as a rhetoric to portray the vulnerabilities of our own blunders .A lively city place ,that jostled with an uncanny nonchalance in everyday work ,was reduced to rubble in a matter of a few seconds .These stark images bear testimony to those moments of chaos ,despair, angst felt by a local citizen.
As I finish penning down my own feelings, I feel that merely confining it to a story can never do justice to those innocent departed souls. There are a lot of questions on the system, government, politics, engineers, and so on. Just as the entire city came together on that fateful day, I hope together we can transcend these petty issues and create a healthy and safe existence in our own City of Joy.
