This is part of a year-long series documenting Zona Norte, Tijuana, Mexico. Zona Norte is home to the "zona de tolerancia" or redlight district.
I started this series because I was curious about the area and couldn't find very many photos of it, nor very much information about the people in the few photos I did find. Photography in ZN is highly discouraged because of the prostitution there, which is permitted. I spent more than two months just visiting there with my camera gear visible before I ever took a photo and used local fixers to help spread the word that I was not trying to expose anyone against their will. All photos I've taken have been with consent of the subjects.
I shoot in Zona Norte once or twice a week then I return with prints of the photos I've taken and give them to the subjects. As I have done this over the past six months, people who live and work there now seek me out to take a photo of them.
