Those photographs are from when I was in the Army, when I deployed to Afghanistan on the first rotation of Operation Enduring Freedom, in January 2002, and then on the first rotation of Operation Iraqi Freedom, in April 2003. They are snapshots - many of them taken with disposable cameras, and whatever camera I could use at the time.
These are snapshots of short but powerful moments of interactions between a young woman in uniform, (I was 23-24 at the time), and the people of the countries we were occupying during a time of war, during a time when assuming something about each other was so much easier than knowing the truth.
They are interactions between human beings.
