PhotoFairs | Shanghai 2016

Alexander Montague-Spraey, Artistic Director, PHOTOFAIRS, selects his highlights of the 2016 edition of PHOTOFAIRS | Shanghai, running at the Shanghai Exhibition Center from September 9-11. For its third edition PHOTOFAIRS | Shanghai is delighted to bring to its programme several innovative, unique and cutting-edge elements which take the subject of photography practice and its market into a new dimension. With Conversations the fair offers a contemporary platform within which to hear international experts in the field discuss key features and developments of the market, both in Asia and beyond. From Korean photography expert Jiyoon Lee to world renowned collector Qiao Zhibing, this sector offers the opportunity for our audience to interact with key members of the art world.  Insights offers a unique museum-quality platform within which to witness the work by some of the most important artists working with contemporary photography today. This year this initiative focuses on the mavericks of the medium who are flipping the practice on its head and exploring important themes concerned with the future of the medium — sometimes, to surprising effect.  The Main sector continues to highlights international artists with impressive installations by some of the stars of the market, whilst Platform puts the spotlight on galleries you might have never seen in Asia before. Our Connected sector will focus on video art and its important relationship with contemporary and digital practice.  All of these different sectors continue to position PHOTOFAIRS | Shanghai as the most international art fair in China and the leading platform for the medium in Asia.
