The diagnosis of my Grandmother has influenced my practice to deal with the themes of dementia. Dementia affects 1 in 6 people over the age of 80, but it is not an illness that is dependent on age. The illness reverses the memory process through the slow deterioration of the brain; this is what causes sufferers to forget events that have just happened but allows them to easily remember events that may have happened a few years ago. As the deterioration of the brain progresses many of the sufferers may begin to be unable to recognise their own belongings which have been owned by them for a numerous of years. The objects may appear distorted and unrecognisable to the sufferer causing them to become disoriented within their own home environment.
