“Simon’s world is ordered according to two exhaustive categories: the living and the dead. The difference between them is absolute, but bleeds: raspberry jam is a little closer to the living than is a rust stain. It is also true that the living has a tendency towards the dead, and occasionally their eventual identity is anticipated visually: all of a sudden, the color of a toe happens to coincide with the floor’s, and the hand and the food being cut up appears to be one. Sometimes there is a transport between categories: the sausage in the pot is reminiscent of the living, while the hand that should be involved in the cooking has been replaced by a pair of tongs of polished metal.”
