Sex workers in Tanzania unfairly pay a double price: they are very often forced to earn money through sex due to circumstances beyond their control, after which they are confronted with rape, abuse, arbitrary arrests, torture and social exclusion.
I made this photo series while I was working on my Master thesis for Sociology. Because sex work is illegal in Tanzania, sex workers don't get protection from the police or the government. They can only rely on themselves and their peers. That is why I investigated the ways they organise themselves and the social coping strategies they adopt to cope with daily hardships and violence.
