Alternative Route
Project info

The pictures below are photographic document from an alternative route that refugees and immigrants took on the 14th of March 2016 in Macedonia. Have been taken with analog camera.

They walked towards the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), in order to cross the borders through an uncontrolled spot. Around 1,500 refugees left the informal Idomeni camp in an attempt to cross the country’s border after hours of walking. The most shocking fact about this route is the crossing of borders, through an affluent of Axios river, having swelled after days of heavy rain. They achieved that by forming a human chain, fighting against the harsh river stream. Their faces and the common fight in solidarity, as it is shown in the images, depicting the human struggle against nature’s phenomenon as well as state policies, blocking borders and controlling flow of humans in desperate condition.
