Fogo is one of the Islands of Cape Verde, an archipelago of 10 islands off the west coast of Africa. Its Northern part consist of caldera of active volcano Pico do Fogo which is 9km wide and 1km tall. The latest eruptions happened in 1995 and 2014. Spreading lava from the eruption in 2014 caused destruction of two villages based in caldera, Portela and Bangaeire.
The inhabitants however did not bend before the force of nature and despite the devastation they returned to their villages to continue to live there. Next to houses flooded by lava they built new ones. The cultivations have been renewed -local people grow grapes, beans and apples. Life in such place is very modest. They adapt their environment as far as possible to their needs and the needs of tourists who visit to take advantage of climbing the high walls of the caldera. It is a very special place. Many of its inhabitants never left, never visited cities or the other islands of the archipelago. These few photos show the special atmosphere of this place and depict what people live like in caldera of Pico do Fogo.
