Night Tube

When London's new 24-hour Underground service finally started in summer 2016, I set out to make portraits of the people riding the Tube through the night as part of a project with the LDNtwentyfour7 collective. I was interested in discovering who I would meet and what kinds of journeys they were making. Using film and an old twin lens camera added obvious challenges to the process, since the location was characterised by low light and movement. When making portraits I see the process as a collaboration with my subject, even when we are strangers. This was especially the case here, as we had to work together to get the shot during the brief moments while the trains stopped at stations. The LDNtwentyfour7 project was exhibited during East London Photomonth 2016 but I have decided to continue the series. As such it should be seen as a work in progress. Night Tube #3 (Charlotte & Fenton) was selected for the Photofusion Salon/16 exhibition and was joint recipient of the Public Choice award.
