This project is to raise awareness for people to understand the value of our fishing resources and the individuals who work so hard to bring a high quality product to market. From the time the fish is caught until it reaches the market, it has been physically handled more than 20 times.
Lumpers shovel by hand and one basket at a time is hoisted from the fishing vessel to the wharf after the F/V arrives in port. The fish they catch can not be automated because it would damage the fish.
Most people have never heard of or have seen Lumpers, or know what they do. They work in a cold, wet, clean but fishy environment. They are on call and work is now unpredictable due to regulations on the fishing fleets. Gloucester is the oldest fishing port in the U.S. and is still trying to hold on to their dwindling fleet.
