My preference in portraiture is to photograph my subjects over many years because I believe that it takes time to know someone - that there’s always more. I feel that if I keep going I’ll unlock a secret and understand something about life.
I’ve been photographing Danny for over 30 years and my daughter Sheena - as an art project - for 21 years. Both of these long-term portrait projects are collaborative. I don’t want to be in total control, because I don’t think that’s the way to get a truthful picture. Rather, I’m looking for the moments when people drop the mask and reveal something of their inner life.
