My ongoing series “In America” investigates my Asian-American identity through self-portraiture.
I spent my childhood years in a Qing dynasty courtyard in Beijing, and have lived in the United States for the past 28 years. My search for an emotional home and a sense of belonging continues. This nearly daily quest has taken me on a rich, spiritual journey which has allowed me to grow as an artist and as a person. Through my pursuit of self-portraits to depict my current place (both geographic and emotional) I have developed a deeper appreciation for my homeland and for the new roots I feel taking hold beneath my feet in America.
