Life on water

Myanmar has always been regarded as a mysterious destination and although the country has recently opened its doors to foreign visitors and investors in many aspects the locals stick to the traditional self-sufficient living. In this series I have tried to capture the everyday life of one of the floating villages scattered around Inle lake region. Due to the scarcity of land fish is still the staple of the local diet. Locals also grow fruit and vegetables in floating gardens ingeniously made with weed beds anchored by bamboo poles. Their way of life may seem to have little to offer to an outsider, even less so to a Westerner. But still, having survived the ordeal of some of the darkest moments in their recent turbulent history, people of Myanmar are undoubtedly capable of maintaining composure, they contemplate the world with friendly curiosity that probably originates from their close ties with Buddhist monasticism.
