Millions of years ago, where today we can see the wonderful landscape of the Natural Park Dolomiti D’Ampezzo, you could see the sea.
Since 2009 the park has been recognized by the UNESCO as a heritage of humanity. It is placed in the north of Italy and remained intact after the First World War, less than a century ago.
Many mountains you can observe have been modified during the War (1914-1918).
The armies contrasted on the peaks dug galleries to realize foxholes, to place mortars and guns.
Soldiers have lived on this peaks for four long years, performing heroic actions of defense and attack.
The battle has changed the profile of the mountains; in fact the same galleries have been mined and exploded to counter the enemies
What we can see today, walking through the mountains, is a landscape rich of history and suffering; it lets us see that the beauty of nature overcomes human power.
The park today is governed by an assembly composed of people born and grown in Cortina, called “Le Regole D’Ampezzo”, so that the Unesco Heritage is safe from current political disputes.
