Kurdistan is the main area of Kurdish residents. The Kurdish is one of the most ancient nationalities in the Middle East. Currently, they mainly live in eastern and southeastern Turkey, northwest of Iran, northern Iraq and northeastern Syria, covering an area of about 400,000 square kilometers. The number of Kurds in the Middle East, ranks only second to Arabia, Turkic and Persian peoples. There are about 30 million Kurds in the world, about 6 million of them live in Iraq, their language is Kurdish, and they believe in Islam, the majority of the group is Sunnite.
For a long time, the Kurds live in the cracks of several countries. During the reign of Sadam Hussein, Iraq had used chemical weapons against the Kurdish. In 2008, Turkey was trying to invade Iraq to establish the PKK in Turkey, of the Republic of Kurdistan by using military forces. In Syria, there are about 200,000 Kurdish, who didn't have the Syrian citizenship until 2011. Now still have countless of Kurds don’t get the citizenship.
Although it is the best period of time for the founding the state of Kurdistan, but so far, there is a slim chance to achieve this. Nowadays, only the Iraqi Kurdish area has founded the autonomous government-Iraq Kurdistan. Iran Kurdish area has been controlled by government troops since Mid 80s, at present, the Iran Kurdish national movement is weak, the organization is split, and only scattered guerrilla activities now. The area of the Kurdistan Region in Syria is relatively small, only 20 thousand square kilometers. In Turkey side Kurdish are more difficult to survive.
The issue of Kurdistan has been existing in the history for a long period, in recent years, due to endless occurrence of the regional conflicts, religious conflicts, terrorists activities etc., the crisis of establishing a state of Kurdistan is increasingly getting severe and complicated although now is the best time in the whole history for Kurdish.
The project of Kurdistan started from 2015. I did a lot of researches about Kurdish and Kurdistan documents, and did a lot of interviews of the Kurdish since 2015 when I came into contact with Kurds and Kurdistan. I started shooting the Kurdistan project in 2016. I was trying a variety of ways to enter the Syria Kurdistan in 2016. But it's not allowed to do that due to the tense situation in the Middle East.
In the past three years, I made a lot of Kurdish friends; they have a strong sense of national pride and national cohesion, even face to a huge pressure from every county where they live. Under the current circumstances of internationalization not only the Kurds who lives in the generally Kurdistan, and even the worldwide Kurds are still maintaining the rich traditional cultural and language inheritance.
In the meantime Kurds is also the most powerful team to against ISIS, and always in the front of the battle. The Kurds say that they are not in the battle for anyone, just for themselves, for Kurds people, for the culture, even more difficult, they will keep fighting till last minute.
