When I was a little girl I used to spend most of my daytime in the garden of my country house. I loved to dig my hands into the soil I used to soak on purpose so as it could become mud, and to smooth it on all my body...
in order to make my mother splash me with the water pump.
My neighbour was 8 years old just like me and he was my best friend at that time. We always used to look up to the sky in order to count the contrails, see if our favourite fruits were ripened on the trees or if it had just rained, and seek and enjoy the rainbow.
At dinner time my father finally used to come back home, and I would have spent all the evening flying airplanes... he made me fly in the sky. Or we used to play together with plastic guns and shoot at each other with little coloured paper bullets. And whenever he shot me I fell down on the floor faking my death, and I was so good at it that he almost believed me!
In the night, when I didn't have to go to school the day after, we used to wait for the falling stars to show up so as to make wishes or to wait for some ufo who was wandering around there. To go back to the city, we would use a tiny car which to me was a huge space ship. One day, we drove our space ship away from the country house and never went back. A few years later my brother was born, Edoardo. When he was born I was 15, I was a teen ager, and the space ship had turned into a normal car. Most times I don’t understand my brother… this is why I decided to take pictures of him instead. I don’t know how he and his friends can have their bodies covered in mud without being dirty, getting wet while staying dry, how can they fly airplanes, how can they be shot without any trace of colored paper balls on them. I cannot explain how they can see rainbows, ufos, shooting stars while always looking down, captured by a screen in a reality that doesn’t exist.
