Kampala Fashion Week

The fashion scene in Uganda is one which has been dominated by the 2nd hand market for some time. Over the past 5 years the city of Kampala has seen a shift in this with an emergence of homegrown designers making an impact on the runway both locally and internationally. Their work represents the creative talent that's been slowly simmering, inspired by materials available, the influences of the import market, and the cultures that define them. Kampala Fashion Weeks first show in 2014 saw only a handful of designers showcasing their work over the course of an evening. By 2016, 20+ designers from across East Africa showcased their work over the course of 3 days in the heart of the city. Over this time I've been lucky enough to document both the designers and models alike who have grown to define a scene in such a short time which had not previously existed in the country. This series provides a look behind the scenes at Kampala Fashion Week 2016, showing the rise of a homegrown industry which has shown no signs of slowing down.
