Just Cuba

My work is related to my roots, as an emigrant I want to collect memories of the country I grew up. I try to capture the surrealistic world who surrounds me, specially do to all related to Cuba is for me in a limbo between nostalgia and reality. I like to see the beauty of what isn't apparently beautiful. If something doesn't awake an emotion in me I don't see the point of making of it a photo. I was born in socialist Cuba in the early 80’s. My childhood was full of Russian cartoons, and a lot of the best universal children’s literature. Their heroes –who always fought injustice – fed my fascination for stories about how people in the most difficult circumstances bear their burden and acknowledge the unnoticed beauty within their problems. I am interested in using that power of film to create empathy and understanding for people who are falling out of the group and are being misunderstood and judged. What is their story? How does it feel to walk in their shoes? Important in my work is that I do not want to show only moments; I am interested in showing the process. I try to get close up to my subjects and understand them. I want to become a part of their lives.
