In Upstate New York, globalization has gutted once-prospering, manufacture-based small towns, leaving behind disintegrating remnants of another era. Tom spends days shooting locations in Upstate New York and abroad. He visits abandoned theme parks, mining towns, deserted homes and farms, and forgotten state institutions.Tom’s images of offbeat vantage points and restricted locations are often attained through long-timed exposures. His high-contrast work evokes solitude and melancholy. It illustrates the relationship between urban infrastructure and the natural environment, as well as the silence of once-vibrant properties reclaimed by nature. Tom represents these places in his work because the images tell of a storied past and an uncertain future.
