This work responds to the reportage of the series of events that have occurred in Puerto Rico since the Fiscal Control Board (FCB) started to operate in order to make Puerto Rico pay off the national debt of 74 billion dollars. Among several austerity measures that the FCB has announced, one of those measures is to cut the University of Puerto Rico's budget by 450 million dollars. This measure, directly affecting the public educational system and its students, has created an immediate reaction that has manifested itself in marches, protests and strikes. The students, who have been the main protagonists of these protests, have declared that they will not stop protesting until they are assured that there will be no budget cuts to the public educational system and that the national debt will not be paid before being audited, thus saving the island of future austerity measures that seemingly only respond to the payment of the debt and not the wellbeing of the citizens and their economy.
