As a child, my father was a sailor. Constantly being away from home, he would send me and my little brother audio tapes of his voice describing as accurately as possible things he saw and people he met. Despite his best intentions and all the details he would give us, the narratives we would picture for ourselves were often far away from the actual events.
I guess this is the most accurate way to describe my work. Exploiting the mystery around certain people and places, showing just enough to let the viewer create a story of his own instead of faithfully representing the facts. For a long time I’ve been torn between my wish to keep an aesthetic free of distortion and my desire to produce impressive visuals out of boredom regarding real life but I am now conscious that every photograph I will ever take will contain both fiction and honesty because of the very nature of the medium, leaving information out of each frame.
I am now travelling and telling stories of my own, visiting for the first time places I remember from my father’s tapes. I still try to avoid lying in the images I make but I guess I’ll always bend the truth a little.
