On recent visits to Varanasi and the regions of Kerala and Punjab, I purposefully traveled small and light. I stayed local, ate local, and used a 35mm lens to get closer to my subjects. My goal was to be immersed in everyday life, to be a fly on the wall.
Immersion was accomplished by what I refer to as "walking the lanes". On any given day, I walked the narrow passages of residential areas; roamed beaches and river walkways; and/or wandered through train stations, bus stations and every type of market. During my ambulations, I met people that wowed me with their strength and quiet determination; stumbled upon moments, both public and private; and saw life lived from a different perspective.
Being a fly on the wall proved to be complicated. Surprisingly, people were as interested in me as I in them.
