“Are We Having Fun Yet” documents share houses in Canberra, Australia and surrounding areas. The work is about the interactions and relationships the occupants have with each other and the spaces they inhabit, having been brought together by the basic necessity to live. I have photographed these individuals as they embark on their next stage of life after leaving their family home; photographed and placed together they investigate the definition of the 21st century family.
Each photograph is composed thoughtfully using a large format camera and black and white film. Using this medium I able to capture every small detail of the space, from the cracks in the walls to the labels of the beer they are drinking. Hence the similarities and differences become visible in each photograph. Each house brings with it a line of commonality; empty bottles, mismatching interiors and found furniture fill the rooms and spaces. Although these differences between each of the houses are shown, the micro-relationships between the individuals as friends become family and houses become homes are also revealed.
