Salt production in the village of Tamarin in Mauritius dates back to the French period and the tradition of its making is almost unchanged after nearly two centuries.
Water is pumped directly from the nearby sea and allowed to evaporate in the basins. Salt is harvested a few days later.
But, the government now wants to import salt from China and not only these workers will face unemployment, without any compensation, but a rich heritage is about to die. There are talks of developers building a parking lot on the property.
