The Spiritual Landscape - Volcanoes in Java

These images are a response to the landscape and culture of Java and it's volcanoes. Java has an undercurrent of mysticism running through its core, with the notion that the world is a layered one - the seen, the unseen, the mutable, - all potentially present. Volcanoes and their capacity for change, not just by eruptions, but by sound, steam, altering weather from moment to moment, are a manifestion of this, not just in the material world, but also in Javanese spiritual belief. The landscapes here are built from multiple views of each location. The combination of changing times, of focus points and lengths, of near and far views, give a sense of these places as a gateway to the other, and offer a counter to a static Western scenic landscape tradition.
