There is a very sharp contrast between the luxury resorts and the population in general in Fiji. In the resorts paying $50-$100 for a meal is not out of the norm, while a good portion of the island lives on mere subsistence. The squatters in this village lost their 99 year lease (not renewed by the land owners), consequently they are forced to live squalor, but still maintaining their pride and self respect. Their story and the rest of the native Fijians is more complicated than this, but that would take volumes.
