For a Moment I Thought I Knew You

In these images David J. Thompson explores the landscapes of his subjects' faces and bodies through a carefully structured photographic working process. The human brain is genetically programmed to read and relate to the tiniest subtitles of the human face in a hugely sophisticated, analytical and emotional way. The experience of standing face to face, is not only the most human of experiences - it goes back to our pre-human selves. Thompson produces these portraits in a very naturalistic way, using mostly daylight, and removing the distraction of colour, so as to enhance the experience of an immediate human to human interaction. The resulting images become almost as much about the observer as the observed. The feeling he experiences whilst shooting people in this intimate way, is that of an intense, but fleeting personal connection. A connection which is relived and savoured at length on viewing the finished images. The feeling that... "for a moment I thought I knew you". Produced mainly in Sweden and London, but also in Brazil, Paris, Italy and elsewhere - this body of work forms part of an on going and constantly developing project.
