The Past Is A Foreign Country

These photographs look back to my upbringing in a deeply religious family. Raised in a small evangelical church, my childhood was shaped by silence, order and self-effacement. Echoes and traces of the strange land of my past, and the uneasy path away from my parents’ convictions, are captured here in this series of images. These photographs, taken in contemporary eastern Germany, picture a 1970s suburban English childhood, shaped and shadowed by the force of religious belief.
