Barcelona is famous because of its beaches, however the coastline was heavily modified and cleaned only after Olympics in 1992. Together with the progress and order, concrete appeared. This was the thing that struck me, in particular when I was exploring this area for the firs time. The gentle mixture of colors, yellowish dark sand, astonishing blue sky and omnipresent concrete cupped together presented appealing aesthetics potential. In addition to that concrete constructions and walls somehow constituted a boarder between between normal living areas and beach area, they mark commencement of coast, somehow paradoxically replacing role of the pine trees. The strong presence of concrete is especially visible in the beaches located farther north toward Forum which accounts for more industrial than tourists oriented area. The project was born out of the interest into the role and aesthetic of concrete spaces as the silent but powerful witness to Barcelona's beach life.
