Belfast Murals The Murals in Belfast, painted during the last century, can be seen as a reflection of political change. They are unique wall paintings which display important historic and political developments. In 1908, loyalists started to portray King William III on a white horse in order to strenghten the orange identity of the Protestants in Northern Ireland. Republican wall-paintings began in the late 1970’s. They can be seen as a visual display of a social movement, which was radicalized after the IRA took over again in the early 1970’s to fight for greater political voice and a reunited Ireland.
